DESIGN Paola MacchiPHOTOGRAPHY Saverio Lombardi VallauriAn artisan laboratory dating back to the beginning of 1900 located in Milan has been renovated and reconverted into a residence that now enjoys open and bright spaces. Light is the main character of the project, whether natural or artificial. White is the colour. Glass is the means: crystal clear, opaque, gleaming or matte. Rooms are on two levels, enhanced by a sophisticated play of filled and empty spaces. A glass cube spreads light from on high. It is an illuminated body, an architectural and technological sculpture, which hosts a bathroom featuring a changing room. Geometrical and asymmetrical shafts of light fall through the ceiling of the first floor and a metal woven mesh unrolls like an evanescent theatre wing. Curtains in technological textile moderate the natural light coming in from the big windows and match it with the artificial light devised by the project. Each and every component is customized. The closets contain the wardrobe, the laundry, the pantry and storage space. “The Light Box” is a “box” in which all the constituent parts harmonically mix in a single object.The project concerned remarkable structural works, such as the reshaping of the supporting beams. Some insulating interlinings in the perimeter walls were added, and cables and climatization panels were installed.

Ristrutturazione-riconversione di un laboratorio della Milano degli artigiani del primo ‘900 in residenza dagli ambienti aperti, chiari e luminosi. La luce è la protagonista del progetto, sia essa naturale che artificiale. Il bianco è il colore. Il vetro è il mezzo: lucido, opaco, più brillante o meno. Gli ambienti sono definiti su due livelli in una composizione di pieni e vuoti. Un cubo di vetro illumina dall’alto: è un corpo luminoso, scultura architettonica e tecnologica, contiene un bagno con spogliatoio. Tagli di luce, geometrici e asimmetrici, “sfondano” il soffitto del primo livello e una tenda a trama metallica si srotola come quinta evanescente. Tende in tessuto tecnologico mediano i rapporti tra la luce naturale, proveniente dai finestroni, e quella artificiale di progetto. Ogni componente è su disegno. Le armadiature contengono guardaroba, lavanderia, dispensa e ripostigli. “Loft di luce” è una “scatola” in cui gli elementi compositivi si fondono armonicamente in un unico oggetto.
Il progetto ha riguardato interventi strutturali notevoli, come il ridimensionamento di travi portanti. Sono state realizzate controfodere nei muri perimetrali per isolamento, canali tecnologici e pannelli di climatizzazione.
